Cool Colleges
for the Hyper-Intelligent,
Self-Directed, Late Blooming,
and Just Plain Different

by Donald Asher

reviewed by Julie Richer

Finding the right college is a little bit like finding a girlfriend or boyfriend. You want one that brings out the best in you. The right college should be both challenging--but not so much that you go nuts--and fun. Unfortunately, too many students do not look past their home-town college or Mom & Dad's alma maters. Those who do are often fixated on the ivy league schools, without giving other possibilities the slightest consideration. This is a shame, because finding the right fit can make all the difference in how well you do in school and how much you enjoy it.

Cool Colleges seeks to remedy this by profiling some great colleges you may not have heard of, as well as giving you some insights into the ivy league. Some sample chapter titles are: "Schools Where Scholarship is Honored," "The Great Books Programs," "Entrepreneurial Studies" and "Flaying, Sailing, and Militarizing."

I read the book from cover to cover in a weekend, and found it both interesting and enjoyable. Donald Asher's style is frank but not off-putting. I particularly liked reading quotes from students who attended the schools he profiles and the comments from admissions officers. I also found the "Cool Book Alerts" sprinkled throughout the book to be useful.

Perhaps you don't think you are "hyper-intelligent,
self-directed, late blooming, and just plain different." Read the book anyway--it's a great resource for all high school students.
