Zack

by William Bell

reviewed by Julie Richer

Zack is a coming-of-age tale in which a high school boy in Canada strikes out on his own to learn why his mother has stayed apart from the rest of her family. The novel combines some very appealing elements: a likable protagonist, a buried "treasure," a road adventure, and well-written dialog. The road trip, in particular, makes for an enjoyable read.

I wish I could say the conclusion, in which the "family secret" is revealed, is surprising. In fact, many readers will find it all too easy to predict. Despite this, I'd still recommend the book. The characters are very well-drawn, and there are enough other surprises along the way to keep you wondering what will happen next.
