The Other Side of Unrequited

They say unrequited love is bitter,
Loving with heart and soul
In exchange for paltry nothings.
I know that much is true.
But the inverse is truer still,
Knowing your lips have power
To exult or crush.
The burden on the loved is so much more than the lover.
The aching heart weeps,
Understanding that it is the wellspring
Of another's pain.
How can I love you,
Not with the love you have for me
But the love that he requires,
The love that sets us free?
Until you realize,
I will pray that, finally,
As out of his eyes or mine,
That you will
