Amos walked on to the library and picked out a book, then headed
back to his cell. While he sat in his cell reading his book, a
guard came to the door and said, "Hey compadre, you have a visitor."
Amos sat up in his bed and looked out. He didn't see anyone he
knew, but that was okay; anyone from the outside was fine. The
door opened, and a short, plump Caucasian guy walked in.
"Hello, Mr. Amos C. Latico. I am Mr. Arthur Greif, attorney-at-law.
Now let's get right down to business." Mr. Greif looked into the
eyes of Amos hatefully when he said, "I want to know, are you
guilty?"
"No! I am innocent."
"Were you involved in anyway?!"
"No! I had nothing to do with it."
"Is it true that you had an argument with Mr. Arvin Hartman?"
"Yes, I had an argument with him, but that was a couple days
ago," Amos replied, shocked by the question that was being thrown
at him.
"What was the argument about, Mr. Latico?"
"I can't remember exactly. I think it was to do with the money
he owed me, that time."
"Why did he owe you money, and what do you mean 'that time'?
"
"Well, it was about a month ago when he asked me if he could
borrow five thousand dollars to pay back a debt he had from gambling.
He didn't want to tell his wife about it because he was supposed
to have stopped gambling about a year ago. If it hadn't been for
that, he would have just taken it from their account, but you
see, she takes care of all the money, and she would notice if
any was gone. Arvin was like a dad to me, when I was growing up,
or grandfather. I had no father growing up; I was raised by a
single mother, who was working all the time."
"Okay I am ready to hear your whole story now, right from the
beginning of that night."
"Well," Amos started out saying, "it was about 7 p.m. when I
got into my car to head for my girlfriend's. We had planned this
for about two weeks before because it was our anniversary dinner.
When I reached Nikita's house, I went in and gave her a kiss and
a hug, like always. She had it all planned out. First we would
get into the hot tub with the champagne, then have the beautiful
dinner she had cooked earlier. We went into the hot tub just like
we had planned, but when dinner came, she was missing the candles
for the table. So I said that I would go get some at the county
store and be back in about 15 minutes. I went to the county store,
but there were no candles there, so I went to the main street
store and got the candles. Then I went right back to the house.
We were right in the middle of dinner when the cops showed up
at the door and said I was under arrest for the murder of Mr.
Arvin Harman. When I heard this, I couldn't believe that he was
shot."
"Wait a minute", "how did you know that Mr. Hartman was shot?"
