Strange Things: Amy's Weekend Adventure

Jessica, 15, from Canada

Chapter One

'BRRRING!' The bell sounded and I quickly closed my locker and walked over to my history class. I opened the door and looked around the classroom. Most of my classmates had arrived. I took my usual spot beside my best-friend Tammy Laxtin. "Hey, Amy!" she said, her medium length blond hair swaying back and forth, "Guess what?" From the tone of her voice I guessed that something exciting had happened to her so I asked her what it was. "Remember the contest I entered? You know, they have a draw and the winner wins a BX 2000 speed boat?" I nodded. "Well. I WON!" "What?" I said, "You won! That's so cool! When are you going to pick up your boat?" "On Saturday. That's tomorrow." "Cool! Also, you won't have to wait at all to use it cause summer vacation is today!" Tammy nodded excitedly. "You can come and have a ride in it sometime if you want," Tammy said. I told it that would be fine. As long as, she didn't get carried away.

We were blabbing on about all the fun things we could do during summer vacation, when our history teacher, Mr. Mic'ber, entered the room and we quickly silenced ourselves, sitting up straight in our seats. "Alright class. Please sit down. Jimmy, please put that Walkman away! Samantha, please put that makeup away!" "Uh-oh! It sounds like Mr. Mic'ber isn't in his best mood today!" Tammy whispered in my ear. I nodded in reply. Mr. Mic'ber began talking about Ancient Greece. I didn't pay much attention to him. History had never been my favorite class. I tried to listen but found it hard to cause the topic in my opinion was very boring as it was to most of my classmates. I glanced at the big white clock on the wall. It was two o'clock. One hour until school was out. I tried hard to concentrate on the history topic. I looked up from my history book and glanced around the room. Most of my yawning classmates were slowly writing down notes and listening to our teacher blab on about the artifacts of Ancient Greece. Except for Jimmy. He wasn't writing down anything at all. He was looking around the classroom too. Then our eyes met and I pointed my nose in the air like something was stinking (roughly Jimmy) and quickly turned back to my books.

Jimmy always made me feel like I was going to throw up. I had known him since third grade when he put a snake down my back. I will never forget or forgive him for that as long as I live! Now, we were in grade eight and Jimmy still had the reputation of being a total immature creep. I never had liked Jimmy's bushy blond brown hair and large brown eyes. I had never been interested in ever being friends. Enemies were better to my mind. My thoughts were interrupted by Mr. Mic'ber, when he started to talk to us about Ancient Greek cultures. I could feel myself slowly falling asleep.

BRRRING! Al right! Saved by the bell; I thought! Finally! School was out. The end of the school day was always my favorite part of every day of the week. I couldn't wait for weekends and now I wouldn't have to go back to school on Monday because today was the first day of summer vacation! I just wanted to relax and not have to worry about homework. Tammy and I walked out of History class together and dropped by our lockers. "I can't believe today is the beginning of our summer break! I've waited weeks for this day!" I exclaimed excitably to Tammy as we gathered our books and supplies from our lockers and shoved them in our backpacks. "Me too! I just can't wait to relax!" "That's just what I was thinking!" I exclaimed and we both laughed out loud. "Hey. I have an idea!" Tammy said suddenly, "Since it's Friday and I have to pick up my boat tomorrow, why don't you sleep over and then we'll pick up my boat on Saturday and go for a ride? I'm sure my mom wouldn't mind. She and my dad are away until Sunday night so we'll have the house all to ourselves!" "Awesome! I'd just love to." I said with excitement, "Are you sure the boat is safe to drive without an adult?" I asked. I'm a little cautious from time to time. "Of course!" Tammy assured me, "It'll be so cool!" "I'll think about it." "Great! Let's go then." Tammy said, leading the way to her house.

"Dawson my man! What's up?" "Nothing." "Come on! There's always something going on in the trilling life of Dawson Leery! So man, cheer up a bit! Come hang out!" "Look Pacey! Will you just give me one minute of peace! Peace Pacey! That's all I want. Is it too much to ask of you?" "Look Dawson. I just wanted you to have some fun. Y'know. Help you out. I bet you really need some cheering up, Y'know with your problem with Joey." "Just be quiet Pacey." 'Menthols freshness! Menthols freshness, full of life!' Click. "I hate that commercial!" Tammy said, turning off her TV. Beep, beep, beep! "Popcorns ready!" I said, jumping up off Tammy's red beanbag. Tammy and I raced downstairs and into the kitchen. Tammy opened the microwave got out the popcorn. "Must we miss our beloved Dawson's Creek?" Tammy asked. "NO WAY!" Tammy and I both shouted at once as we ran up the stairs laughing.

"GRRR! GROWWLL!" After we had finished watching Dawson's Creek and some other show; Tammy had put a classic black and white horror movie that she had rented, into her VCR. I sat on the beanbag chair with my head covered in a blanket. I shivered and nervously bit my lip. "Is the scary part over?" I asked. "Uh?" Tammy was glued to the TV screen as usual, "Oh! Yeah. It's over. You can come out of your blanky now," Tammy responded, snickering quietly under her breath. I signed with relief and pulled the blanket off my head, just in time to see the hideous face of the monster! "AHHH!" I screamed, "Tammy! That was dirty pool!" "You fell for it!" Tammy blurted out, hysterically laughing her head off. Tears fell from her eyes. "I don't think I can handle this!" I said in a baby voice, "If you need me I'll be under my blanky!" I threw the blanket over my head messing up my long brown hair. Tammy was still laughing. "It's not funny!" I said, my words muffled by my blanket. Tammy continued her uncontrollable giggles. I smiled and pulled off the blanket. "Yes it is," I started to laugh along with Tammy. We shut up when the closing credits appeared on the screen. "Movies over," Tammy exclaimed stopping the tape, "It's twelve o'clock. Want to watch South Park?" "But of course!" Tammy switched her Television from the VRC to TV setting. After we finished watching South Park Tammy and I made up my bed. "That's good," I said putting a blanket and pillow on the foam mattress covered with a white sheet. "Glad you like it," Tammy replied climbing into her own bed, "Goodnight." "Goodnight, Tam."
